Comment: I drive a bright green Honda Element named Elphaba. Come on, what would you name a bright green car that's shaped like a toaster?

Director

Experience: Teacher and director at Randolph School for the past eight years. Formerly Fantasy Playhouse Academy Director.  I have directed (or assisted)  many, many community plays over the years including Hair, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Li'l Abner, Camelot, The Sum of Us, Angel Street, Kiss Me, Kate, Shenandoah, The Secret Garden, The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man in the Moon Marigolds, Rapunzel, A Raisin in the Sun and It Happened In Hamelin.

Preferences: I love plays with deep, complex characters with great relationships between those characters. I like to put the emphasis on the acting and not on the tech. So, where does Li'l Abner fit in, you ask? I love comedies and musicals, too.  It's all about the play and not about the genre. I adore well-written plays by authors such as Arthur Miller, Lorraine Hansberry, David Stephens, Eugene Ionesco or Romulous Linney. If I can read past the first 20 pages, that's a good sign. I also love children's theatre, but there is so much bad children's theatre literature out there, it is truly hard to find a good one! I say, "show me the script!"

Awards: After 8 years at Randolph, my terrific group of seniors hit their mark and just found out that our production of Marigolds was invited to perform at the International Thespian Festival this summer (2008). This is, without a doubt, the best award I have ever received. Hands down. The second best award was being named Troupe Director of the Year by the Alabama Educational Theatre Association this year. Yes, I have Wings Awards, Big Spring Awards, Twick-in-Ham Awards and a host of other stuff. However, these pale in comparison.

Other: It's hard for me to pick a favorite.  Right now, today (just hours after the notification of a HUGE prize) I would have to say that "Gamma Rays" is one of my all time favorites. But, I adore "Sum of Us," and "Crucible," worship Lorraine Hansberry and "Raisin" and can't think of more energizing musicals than Hair or Shenandoah.
