Marie's Last Line
Bimini Road, Berkeley Bob's Coffee House, Cullman, Alabama, February, 2005. Segues into "Marie's Last Line" from "Birdsong".
The only time I miss Marie
Is almost always, and constantly
She's on my mind both night and day
Just sits there in her special way
A twinkling eye and cocked up ear
Headlight shining down so clear
You might go blind, might need to yell
With Marie you just can't ever tell
Marie's a child, almost a saint
She's clever, though sometimes she ain't
She's a mastermind of the understated
The foolish find her complicated
But no one cares when she's around
They give Marie that dancing ground
Beside her soul and all her charms
They hope to wrap her in their arms
Marie, Marie, Marie, Marie
Marie, Marie, Marie, Marie
dit on, "Marie", je parle, "Marie"
j'aime tu, Marie,
j'aime tu, Marie
The first time I ever saw Marie
She was punching tickets endlessly
The clowns and tigers got the dough
Marie laughed and said "I told you so"
Don't why she's such a laugher
Only know she always was
When I ask why she talks to me
She says, "I don't know, just because."
Marie's might have the only line
That works on me most every time
Soft and low and warm she'll whisper
If I breathe too loud, I'd almost miss her
I never know just what she said
Whatever, I just go ahead
I always follow Marie's advice
She's never had to ask me twice
The last time that I saw Marie
She was sitting on somebody's knee
She was making faces, making eyes
At anyone who'd philosophize
Pure and simple, right at home
Didn't have to be alone
Never did and does not still
Some kinds of girls they never will
